Railroads Railroads Highways Ports Airports

Railways in Southeast Coastal Georgia are closely networked to ports and military installations. Two Class I railway lines—CSX and Norfolk Southern—and three short line railways serve the area’s business interests. Additionally, Amtrak provides passenger rail services from Savannah and Jesup.

The main artery for railroad traffic into and out of Florida runs through Charlton County. All of CSX’ trains moving to Florida (except the few trains that go west) pass through Folkston, carrying automobiles, coal, gravel, phosphate, grain, sulfur, and orange juice. Eight Amtrak trains also pass daily. Waycross is the home of CSX’ Rice Yard, the largest rail yard in the Southeast.

The short line First Coast Railroad operates a 32-mile line from Fernandina, FL, to Seals, GA, and handles about 15,000 carloads annually, interchanging with CSX. Much of the business includes pulp and paper, and chemicals and agricultural products. The St. Marys Railroad is an 11-mile operation running from St. Marys to Kingsland, GA, where it connects with First Coast Railroad, with a 3-mile spur serving the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. The Golden Isles Terminal Railroad interchanges with both CSX and Norfolk Southern from the Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal.

Norfolk Southern serves the Port of Brunswick as it travels through a portion of the six county SEGA Joint Development Authority territory.  A recent capacity improvement during the summer of 2009 facilitated service improvements and it also set the stage for the safe and efficient handling of future business with the grand opening of the Odum Siding.  A myriad of commodities are transported over the Brunswick District between Macon and Brunswick including automobiles headed for the Port and traffic serving the paper industry in the local Brunswick area.  Norfolk Southern also feeds the southeast as it traverses southern Charlton County enroute to Jacksonville, FL.  Norfolk Southern is an industry leader in safety and operates in 22 states with route miles totaling over 20,000.
